Seven Questions with Ryan Jacobs

Director of Missions, Sacramento Region Baptist Network
Did someone say Chef Extraordinaire? Or Director of Missions for the Sacramento Region Baptist Network? He is both! Ryan Jacobs is as talented in the kitchen as he is working with the pastors in his network! He is also the senior pastor for the First Baptist Church of Orangevale, as well as serving on the CSBC Executive Board. He and his wife of 11 years share a blended family with a daughter and son. If Ryan isn’t in the kitchen whipping up a culinary delight for his family or a fellow pastor, he enjoys woodworking. In fact, he self-admittedly does a lot of it, both at the church and at home!

1. What book are you currently reading?

Right now, I'm reading The Gospel Invitation: Why Publically Inviting People To Receive Christ Still Matters by O.S. Hawkins and Matt Queen. It's about how to orchestrate and deliver a public invitation to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. I got the book from the evangelism workshop that the CSBC has been putting on in the different associations. Also, I'm reading 1st Samuel in the mornings with my wife. Most mornings (I won't say every morning) we read together and pray together for our family.

2. Toilet paper, under or over?

It's over because that's for civilized people. Parents of small children and cat owners put it backwards. Haha! Cat owners do it so that if the cat goes up to play with the toilet paper, it doesn't roll.

3. Tell us your best, ministry horror story.

It was my first time preaching in front of a crowd. I was asked to assist my senior pastor at Union Gospel Mission. (It's a homeless program.) We were supposed to preach together. He was supposed to get us started, and then I would finish the sermon. I had taught before, but it was in smaller group settings. My senior pastor gave me a topic and told me what he would be preaching on. I prepared as best I could. I felt like this was it. I had finally written my first real sermon! On the night of the event, he went up and preached for about 10 min on nothing we had discussed, not even in the same realm. Yes, he was talking about God, but that was about it. Everything that I had prepared was going to be way off. So, then it was my turn to preach. I couldn't use anything that I had prepared. As I'm walking up, I'm sweating so much I felt like I was going through an anxiety attack. I get up on the stage and a guy from the front row shouts ‘Hey Ryan! Is that you?’ It was a friend of mine from junior high. So, there is this whole crowd of like 300 people and a third of them are now talking and I'm supposed to start preaching and I had to calm them down. I just started preaching and it turned out okay. I was sweating like crazy! Afterwards I said to my pastor, ‘hey dude, that's not what we talked about.’ And he replies, ‘Yeah, I'm sorry, man, I just really felt like the Lord was telling me to preach about something else.’ I told him, ‘I really wish God, or you, or anybody would have told me you changed your mind.’ For some reason I came back and did it again.

4. What has been an evangelistic tactic that has worked best for you?

I try to stay completely fluid with the situation. Different situations call for different things. I can't say that one way works best. I want to open conversations- to talk about meaningful topics and look for what weighs heavy upon the person with whom I am talking. I’ll use that to pry a little bit into what makes that topic so weighty for them. From there, I try to move to talking about how Jesus and God respond to that topic. However, if people want to stop the conversation, my tactic is to leave them with a little pebble in their shoe, something that when they walk away, they have to think about it later. I don't need to win the conversation. I am instructed to preach the gospel – Jesus saves people. It’s just about leaving a little pebble.

5. Tell us something that nobody knows about you.

I'm a pretty open book, so I’m not too sure what most people might not know about me. I love to cook. And I cook a lot? But everybody knows that, especially in our association. I cook probably twice a month for all of our pastors. I enjoy barbecuing. I would say my specialty is ribs. I cook at least 30 racks of ribs every year. It's for a big rib cook off that we do at the church.

6. What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

I would say, “All your mistakes are part of you, but they’re not the defining part. Because Jesus is who defines you.” I had a rather bad childhood. So that question hits hard.

7. When you think through all the names of Christ, what name resonates with you right now and why?

I'd say it's “I AM.” It's a declaration that there is one God and Jesus is God. When Jesus calls Himself the first and the last in Revelation 1:17, He is also declaring the same thing there. There's one God and it’s Him!
