Seven Questions with Jeremy Sin

Jeremy Sin
Executive Director, Chinese Baptist Fellowship
2023 has been dedicated as a year of introducing California leaders for 7 Questions but we are bending the rules a little bit because CSBC got to spend time this week with the Chinese Baptist Fellowship (CBF) and had the chance to sit down with CBF’s Executive Director, Rev. Jeremy Sin. Jeremy, who also serves as a National Mobilizing Missionary for the North American Mission Board, has spent many of his ministry years in California. He pastored both in Gardena and San Francisco, had all of his children here in California, and earned (what he calls) his “highest degree” from Gateway Seminary. Those credentials, we believe, give him standing as a Southern Baptist leader in a California context.

1. What biblical character (other than Jesus) would you want to meet, and why?

Joshua…. He walked into big shoes for the final nine yards and his role was critical going into the Promised Land working with multi generations across the Jordan River which included people who had no Christian memory. I think there are similarities for us today in that scripture.

2. Pepsi or Coke?

I live in Atlanta, so I have no choice. I have to say Coke. (He also gave the same answer to the question: "In-N-Out or Chick-fil-A?").

3. What has been an evangelistic tactic that has worked best for you?

For churches, we have to find opportunities to celebrate so we can make contact with people and share Christ’s love with them. And we can let them know we are available when they are facing any challenge. Then we have more chances to share Christ with them. Examples of opportunities to celebrate would be Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival or even a church anniversary.

4. What is your favorite Bible verse or what is a Bible verse you are currently meditating over?

Acts 20:24 – “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace.” It makes me think ~Where does God want me to go? And tells me that I have to finish it well …I can recall so clearly how this verse meant so much to me when I began my ministry… and I graduated from seminary back in 1982!

5. Tell us something that nobody knows, a fun fact about you?

I was very shy and very weak when I was in Jr. High and High School. I was so shy that my 6th grade teacher was surprised to hear that I became a pastor – And I was so weak, physically, that my PE teacher wouldn’t allow me to be in his class in high school. I was a really sad boy in Hong Kong. When I finished my second marathon at 59-years-old, I was a happy boy.

6. What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Be more patient. I think we all would like to expect the result sooner. Our job is to be persistent… Being patient doesn’t mean to wait passively but be persistent.

7. When you think through all the names of Christ, what name resonates with you right now, and why?

The Life…. I think that so often, after you’ve been a minister for a long time, it seems like we are just going through the motions. We have to have life and we want people to receive Life.
