Seven Questions with Francis Chung

Francis Chung
Missions Initiatives Team Leader
This week we are featuring our engaging Missions Initiatives Team Leader. Francis Chung is known for his strong faith foundation, thoughtful spirit, and tenacity for engagement. Since joining the CSBC family in September of 2021, Francis has brought a quiet strength to his position. In his role he works with different entities in resourcing the local church in cross-cultural missions. Francis also oversees Migrant Ministries and Women’s Ministry Network as part of the Missions Initiatives Team. In California, one does not need to cross an ocean to encounter a different culture. As Francis would describe it, "you can simply walk across the street and find yourself in a different culture from your own." By working with California’s plentiful ethnic fellowships, missions provide numerous opportunities for connection, and growth in the great commission.

1. What book are you currently reading?

There are two actually. Necessity of Prayer by E.M. Bounds and Prayer with No Intermission: 40 Days to Unceasing Prayer by Bill Elliff. I’m really trying to place more focus on prayer right now. There is something lacking, and I am trying to find balance in my leadership and my own strength. Right now my role is interceptor through prayer for my family, church, CSBC, and my ministry. That role of seeking the Lord’s wisdom is the most important thing I can do right now.

2. What biblical character (other than Jesus) would you want to meet, and why?

Again, there are two. Enoch and Elijah. They never physically died. Both were swept into heaven. When I think about walking with Enoch or riding a chariot of FIRE. I mean what was that like? I think that would be pretty cool!

3. Toilet paper, under or over?

Um... you know… I think of it more in terms of front or back. I would go with front (over). It makes me think of hotels, how they have the toilet paper end folded so nicely. They have to put it in the front, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to appreciate the work of their folding design. Presentation is important.

4. Who has been the most influential person in your Christian life, and why?

Great question. Its hard to narrow down to just one person….I would say earlier in my Christian faith my parents were the most influential people for me. My father because of his consistency to his faithfulness, serving the Lord for decades really set an example for me. My mother, for her sensitivity. She taught me what it means to cry out for the Lord. She would end every phone call in prayer and at the time I thought that was just something she did. But now, I appreciate that more. Her example of sensitivity to the spirit was tremendous to me. But if I am thinking about my life right now…the person I would point to is my wife, Glenda. She has taught me what it means to serve sacrificially and without fanfare, to extend grace when people wrong her, to value truth, and to have faith that God will act for our best and His glory regardless of our situation.

5. What would be one piece of advice you would want to give to your younger self if you could?

Spend less time doing things. Spend more time with the Lord. Spend time resting with the Lord and in the Lord. It is not necessary to constantly be doing something. Time with the Lord in invaluable.

6. If you could choose one place in the world to visit where would it be?

The garden of Eden. The garden is a place untouched by sin. What would creation be like without sin? I would really appreciate and enjoy going there and experience just what that would be like.

7. What is the most important role you fulfill in your life right now?

Father is the name I would choose. There is an intimacy there that the Lord wants us in His presence. As an example, even in the Lord’s prayer, "Our Father who art in Heaven"…the intimacy of that closeness the Lord wants to have with us, and with me, means so much to me at this time in my life.
