7 Questions with Port Wilburn

Port Wilburn
Director of Missions for the Bridges Bay Association
This week we introduce you to Port Wilburn, the Director of Missions for the Bridges Bay Association. With his name in lights as he stepped out onto the football field, and a muffled announcer calling Mr. Wilburn’s number, God’s call to play on His kingdom team proved louder. Port sees himself as a kingdom builder. In his roles as husband, father, pastor, and missionary with Rock Harbor Christian Church, he looks forward to meeting and connecting with whoever God send’s his way. When asked how he personally approaches each day, he says, “I enjoy helping people find their purpose and their passion.”

What podcast are you listening to right now?

There are a couple I like, but the Carey Nieuwhof Leadership podcast is one that I tune into pretty regularly.

Toilet paper, under or over?

It doesn’t matter. After having 5 kids, we don’t have time to pay attention to that.

Tell us something that nobody knows about you.

I wouldn’t say that nobody knows this about me, but not very many people know that I was briefly part of the NFL. And when I say “N-F-L,” I mean, “Not-For-Long.” I attended the camp for the Miami Dolphins, where I played left tackle as an offensive lineman.

Tell us your best, ministry horror story.

Well, this is not so much a horror story, but I was still extremely embarrassed at the time when this happened. I was at a church and didn’t yet know their lingo… the pastor had asked me to get up and open the doors of the church. So, I got up from my seat, walked to the back of the church, opened the doors, and returned to my seat. Come to find out “open the doors” means to give an alter call.

What biblical character (other than Jesus) would you want to meet, and why?

I would most want to meet Barnabas. Through his scripture, he taught me about being an encourager. He taught me what my purpose is. I find him encouraging all throughout the Bible.

When you were in high school what career had you imagined you would be in right now?

When I was in high school, I imagined I would be playing for the NFL. I would definitely be retired from that now, but, I can’t imagine having done anything else at this point. I believe I am where I am because He has guided, directed, and redirected me. He ordained me to do what I am doing now.

When you think through all the names of Christ, what name resonates with you right now and why?

Yahweh – “I Am,” as it states in Exodus 3:14. “I Am that I Am.” I just need God to be God.
