The Evangelistic Heart of Millennials and Gen Z

For centuries, evangelism has been a widely encouraged practice among faithful believers. Apprehension towards evangelizing a friend, family member, or other loved one was generally due to the believing person feeling ill-trained to share. Countless evangelism conferences, trainings, and curriculums can be found in abundance across the nation and perhaps the world, equipping those ready to be mobilized to share the Gospel with neighbors and the nations.

At the CSBC, there has been a fundamental premise that, no matter how evangelistically fruitful a church is (or is not), we all value evangelism. Our CSBC evangelism workshops across California use this foundational belief to provide resources and ideas to churches in an effort to leverage this intrinsic value for reaching the lost with the Gospel.

For the first time, however, we are seeing a shift in the heart of the believer toward evangelism, particularly in the worldview of the Millennial (28-43-year-olds, born between 1981-1996) and Gen Z (12-27-year-olds born between 1997-2012) generations, though it is also becoming prevalent in others as well.

Millennials today face a unique battle that previous generations have not had to work through. The question is no longer “how” do I share my faith, but rather “should” I share my faith?

Barna Group recently published an article stating millennials struggle with the mandate of sharing their faith, and up to half believe it is wrong to do so. It is a fascinating read, and I encourage you to check it out (https://www.barna.com/research/millennials-oppose-evangelism/). We need practices and strategies to help Millennial Christians understand that sharing their faith is right, true, and worthy of their investment in a “you do you” world.

Gen Z, however, is also entering the world stage of evangelism and missions, and it should excite us. What Gen Z-ers bring to the table are skill sets that have the potential to radically transform the modes in which our churches reach their communities, and church leaders need to take notice. Baptist Press recently shared an article spelling out what Gen Z can bring to your team and what they need from you (https://www.baptistpress.com/resource-library/bptoolbox/where-gen-z-gets-it-right-and-what-we-should-learn-from-them/). Your Gen Z leaders are a goldmine of potential. Invest in them, value them, give them a seat at the table, and believe in them. They could very well be the generation that sparks a spiritual revival across our nation.

Regardless of where any one person places value on evangelism, Jesus’ command in scripture is clear and unchanging. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

May we prove faithful until He returns.
