In Conclusion – Terms
As we bring this training tutorial to a close, there are specific terms that are used (mostly incorrectly) that need to be mentioned here and the correct way to use them:
| “When you want to make a motion. . .” | “You say. . .” |
| 1. Nominate 2. Amend 3. Commit/Refer 4. Previous Question 5. Question of Privilege 6. Adjourn | 1. I move to nominate 2. I move to amend 3. I move to commit/refer 4. I move for Previous Question. (Question stops all debate of the motion on the floor and brings an immediate vote, with a second, and must have a 2/3 majority vote). 5. I rise for a question of privilege. (Question of privilege, if granted by the chair, permits a messenger/member to interrupt pending business to stat an urgent request or motion) 6. I move to adjourn |
The motion to adjourn must, like all motions, be seconded and voted upon so that the chairperson cannot end a meeting without the convention/meeting’s consent. If all the business is finished and the preselected hour to adjourn has arrived, the convention/meeting need not move to adjourn; the chairperson may ask, “Is there any further business; if there is none, the chairperson may then say, “Then I hereby adjourn the meeting.” The convention/meeting is adjourned.
