One of the most important aspects of leading well is examining the reason why you lead.
My journey with leadership started from in my teens, but I didn’t think of myself as a leader. It was just an unction within that always made me want to take responsibility for others. From being a confidante to friends, organizational, business and ministry leadership, I’ve been blessed with many opportunities to lead.
But the main reason why I embraced these opportunities I didn’t actively pursue but organically grew into, was not about me.
It was always about what can I do to help others be all that they were designed to be.
Effective leadership begins with a self-less mindset. It’s not about who will listen to you or follow you, but instead who is willing to follow you because of all you do for others.
Jesus modeled this to His disciples when they were arguing about which one of them was the greatest.
Basically Jesus made it clear…
It ain’t about you! (Pardon my contextual paraphrase)
Luke 9:46-48 NIV
Ultimately, if you are pursuing leadership and desiring to do so well, check your motives first. That I believe is one of the most important foundations of a good leader.
Realize the greater question is not why do I want to lead, but instead why do I feel called to serve in a leadership role.
Lead well by focusing on serving others with the mindset of more of them and less of you.
