Every Pastor Needs a Coach

Baptists aren’t known for drinking cocktails, only Kool-Aid, right? But CSBC is offering a cocktail of resources that are a powerful one-two punch, not in your gut, but in the heart of your church leadership.

At a Count the Cost training event, Ralph Neighbor once said something powerful that I’ve yet to forget. He said, “I believe every Pastor needs a coach.” I thought he may have been exaggerating for effect, but since then, I’ve come to agree wholeheartedly.

For decades, as a Pastor, I operated under the assumption that I knew what to do next… until I didn’t. I was motivated enough to attend the next conference, study the next leadership book, and become a fan of successful ministries who seemed to hold the secrets to the quantum leap in the growth and fruitfulness I desired. Some resources were helpful, but most others fell short of what I needed to move forward personally and professionally.

Counseling explores the past, but every Pastor needs a coach to help them take hold of the future. Mix a desire to grow personally with the desire to grow your church, and you will find the Count the Cost coaching combo to be -not a one-size-fits-all solution but- a measured and steady tool that will compound results over time.

Some say this approach errs on the side of being numbers-focused. Yet, I see churches plateau or decline for bigger reasons than a lack of good metrics or goal setting. I have found that the biggest barrier to my personal and church growth is looking at me in the mirror every day.

As a Certified Christian Leadership Coach, I often ask pastors the following question:

“What is the rock in the road that is keeping you from reaching your current goal?”

A recent client blurted out, “I think I’m the rock in the road!” He was exactly right. Asking more questions, he and I, together, mapped out a plan and a timeline that has created not a quick fix, but a steady move forward, removing the rock and producing the results he said he wanted.

In the context of being coached, I discovered that I don’t need a cheerleader or a fiery motivational speech. I need a plan and a mentor-coach who knows how to ask the right questions and help me remove the barriers in front of me. It’s a solid, one-two punch. Every pastor needs a coach with the wisdom to know that “the purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” (Proverbs 20:5)
