Legal & Risk Management Guidance for Ministry Leaders on Navigating Religious Exemptions in Their Congregation, August 25, 2021.
Have you had a congregant ask you for a signature to help them get a religious exemption for vaccines? If so, you’re not alone. While the topic is a touchy one, it is important that we address it and help you, the leaders of ministries, to answer questions that your congregation and employees have. What is covered? What is safe? What is legal? All these questions were addressed in this webinar.
Bob Tyler, from the Law Firm of Tyler & Bursch, provided the legal opinion on how this can be discussed in the church, while also providing individuals on a path on how to go about making the decision. Charlie Cutler, from ChurchWest Insurance Services, answered questions about risk management issues and how insurance coverage responds.
The decision to not vaccinate is a personal one. Ministry leaders should be pointing people who ask about obtaining an exemption to an outside resource such as this one from Advocates for Faith & Freedom. It is important to note that the individual requesting the exemption download this form personally. The role of the ministry leader is not to provide medical or legal advice but to counsel on the spiritual aspects of the exemption request. If the ministry leader is asked to provide a letter to accompany the religious exemption request, those can be obtained by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
For other legal assistance questions, please reach out to ChurchWest here and they will get it to the right resource.
