With more than thirty-nine million people, and only one in five identifying as evangelical Christians, over thirty-one million Californians have yet to encounter the hope of the gospel. This reality underscores the urgency of our mission. But it also highlights the incredible opportunity God has placed before us. With nearly 2,300 congregations, the California Southern Baptist Convention (CSBC) is strategically positioned to bring light into one of the most spiritually diverse regions in the nation.
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief serves as one of the most visible and tangible ways we fulfill that mission. Through training individuals, mobilizing teams, and partnering with local churches, CSBDR equips believers to respond when crises strike, whether fires, floods, or earthquakes. Each response becomes an opportunity for people to see God’s glory through our actions and love.
This ministry is made possible by the faithful financial support of churches. Every gift allows us to purchase essential supplies, maintain equipment, train volunteers, and respond quickly and safely when disaster hits. Through disaster response, we also have the privilege of bearing witness to God’s character in how we relate to others — government agencies, NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), and others responding. In meetings, coordination efforts, and joint responses, we seek to honor those in authority and encourage our partners, letting the light of Christ shine through every relationship. In this way, even institutions and organizations can see a reflection of God’s glory through the humility, respect, and servant-hearted spirit of His people.
The fruit of this approach is unmistakable.
During the Los Angeles fires earlier this year, CSBDR volunteers engaged in more than 5,400 gospel conversations, over 5,000 moments where compassion opened the door for hope. These are not just numbers. They represent lives touched, hearts comforted, and seeds of faith planted in the ashes of tragedy.
Our work also strengthens the Church’s witness in the local community. When disasters occur, it is often the local congregation that responds first. They know their people and their neighborhoods, and they move quickly to help. CSBDR supports these churches with resources, coordination, and training so they can serve safely and effectively. Together, we amplify their impact — helping them reconnect with their communities and extend Christ’s love when it is needed most.
