Introducing The Journey: Children’s Missions Camp

Introducing The Journey: Children’s Missions Camp

In September of 2023, California WMU embarked on something new. For 3 days and 2 nights at Sierra Christian Service Camp in Posey, California, children ages 2nd-6th grade gathered to learn about and pray for missions, meet missionaries, and embrace their missional role in God’s kingdom.

The idea for The Journey: Children’s Missions Camp was fostered when I realized that my oldest daughter, Juanita (as well as many of my nieces), was of age to attend Girls in Action Camp, but since California doesn’t have a GA Camp, Juanita would not be able to go.

That’s when CA-WMU decided it was time to launch a Children’s Missions Camp, not just for girls, but for all the children in California. After months of advertising, planning, and conversations across the state, The Journey: Children’s Missions Camp began. California Southern Baptist Disaster Relief and California Campers on Mission helped with planning the camp, and Disaster Relief sent volunteers to provide and prepare the food for the entire week.

To keep camp affordable for all children, grants were provided from CSBC designated funds and Kern County Southern Baptist Association, while Disaster Relief paid for the food, CA- WMU women raised money for children’s scholarships, and National WMU provided the curriculum.

Planning the camp was a faith journey for me and the rest of the CA-WMU leadership. We watched in awe as God met our needs one by one, as He led Southern Baptists and Southern Baptist Churches all over California to bring their children and come alongside.

First Baptist Lake Isabella, Fellowship Baptist Church of Bakersfield, and Mt. View Baptist Church of Lake Isabella provided essential leadership and help to staff the camp. Gil DeLaRosa (DOM for Gold Coast Baptist Association) served as camp pastor.

17 children, 2 youth, and 17 adults were in attendance, including 2 incognito International Mission Board Missionaries. After a rousing 3 days of worship, s’mores, hikes, night games, bible lessons, sermons, and missionary testimonies, 2 children and 1 youth made decisions to get baptized, and one child surrendered to full-time mission work.

The Journey: Children’s Missions Camp 2024 will be 4 days and 3 nights in Posey, California, from August 7th-10th. It is open to children who have just graduated 2nd-6th Grade, and there are spots for youth helpers as well!
