FIRST-PERSON: DOM Wives Fellowship “A Huge Blessing”

When my husband Greg Kilgore accepted the position of Director of Missions/Associational Missions Strategist for the Mid-Valley Baptist Association, I didn’t know there was a precious community of “DOM Wives” waiting to welcome me into their fold. Over the last year and a half that my husband and I have served the churches in the Mid-Valley association, this group of women has been a source of encouragement, community, and resource for me. I have learned from them, laughed with them, and prayed with them as we share the highs and lows of our unique ministry.

Before becoming the Director of Missions, my husband Greg served as the senior pastor of First Baptist Oakhurst for eight years. During those years, I became comfortable with my role as the wife of the pastor. I found places to serve and help in the church where I could. When my husband switched ministry positions, I was unsure how the experience of being a pastor’s wife would transfer. I was pleasantly surprised that, as a DOM wife, there was a space for me to continue to serve our churches using the skills I gathered as a pastor’s wife. In our church in Oakhurst, I helped lead the music, and I have been able to lead music at some of the churches Greg has preached at.

The two days that the DOM wives get to meet in March are always a huge blessing to me. We spend time in fellowship together, talking, praying, and sharing resources. This year, we also got to tour a chocolate factory! On the first day, we spent some time sharing the current highs and lows of our ministry. It gave us a chance to catch up on each other’s lives and ministries and to also hear specific prayer requests. This year, after three ladies shared, we stopped and gathered around them to pray for them specifically. We continued to do this until we had prayed for each woman in the room. I loved this time. Many of us have similar joys and struggles and it is comforting to talk about those things together and then to pray over each one.

One of the most helpful activities we do together is share resources. We spent time on both days discussing ways to serve the churches in our associations. As a newer DOM wife, it is helpful to hear how the other DOM wives are supporting their husbands and their churches. We talked about many things including reaching women in our churches, providing theological education to women, annual meeting ideas, ways to involve our ethnic churches, pastors’ and wives’ retreats, and much more! One of the things that I started doing in the Mid-Valley Baptist Association is a women’s event. I was able to share with the other DOM wives the success of our first two women’s events over the last year. Our first event had 50 women, and our second had almost 80!

In addition to discussing resources, praying for each other, and sharing meals together, we also played a few games and took a short excursion to tour a chocolate factory around the corner from the offices. These were great activities to help us get to know each other better. I enjoy spending time with these ladies, and I am thankful for our time together.

I was greatly blessed by the time spent with these women. They are a constant source of encouragement to me, and I learn from them each time we are together. Thank you to the CSBC and all our CSBC churches who help provide this space for us. I am extremely grateful for the support that our churches give, through the California Missions Offering to the DOMs and DOM wives like me.
