CSBC Executive Board Elects Committee Leaders, Learns of CP Shortfall

FRESNO, CA – Board members assembled on January 25 for the first board meeting of the 2024 year. The meeting was led by Shawn Beaty, pastor at Clovis Hills Church and Chairman of the Executive Board. This gathering marked the first meeting for newly elected Convention President Rolland Slade, Pastor at Meridian Southern Baptist Church in El Cajon. Slade shared with board members his vision to make sure all CSBC churches feel a part of the family regardless of size, make-up, or region. “Every church counts,” said Slade as he closed his words of greeting.

Committee members heard reports from California Southern Baptist agency representatives of The Baptist Foundation of California (BFCal) and California Baptist University (CBU). “We are committed to pastors,” said Jonathan Jarboe, president of the Foundation. Jarboe went on to report that the Foundation has supplied funds into a variety of ministry-focused endowments, including an additional $75K into the endowment created to support the Pastors Conference, $75K in an endowment to support CBU students involved in the BAT program (Bachelor of Applied Theology) interested in a double major, $75K into the 13th check initiative endowment for Guidestone’s Mission:Dignity, which is co-sponsored by the Foundation and the Convention, and another $75K into an endowment established to support Gateway Seminary students pursuing a ministry degree. Following Jarboe’s report, he presented two checks to Pete Ramirez, Executive Director of the California Southern Baptist Convention. The first check, in the amount of $119,000, was drawn from an established endowment created ten years ago by the First Baptist Church of Norwalk in the name of SoCal Ministries. The second check, in the amount of $33,000, was given for church planting efforts in California. Jarboe concluded his report by saying, “We are committed to our partners, CSBC, CBU, Gateway, and the associations. The Foundation is in this together with you.”

John Montgomery, Associate Vice President for Student Services at California Baptist University, shared several highlights from the university, including the procuring of a mobile clinic that would broaden the school’s clinical presence, allow added control in providing clinical requirements to students, as well as to help better service under-served populations. Montgomery went on to share that recently, two buildings on campus have been named: the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center as well as the Hae & Shina Park Business Building. Updating board members on the progress made in the athletics department, he noted that CBU has earned 45 national championships since 1999 and 169 individual national champions. Montgomery concluded by informing attendees that November 30 will mark Dr. Ron Ellis’s 30th anniversary as the university’s president. He also went on to celebrate several growth accomplishments during Dr. Ellis’ leadership, including:

  • Enrollment growth from 808 in 1994 to 11,580 in the fall of 2023
  • Budget growth from 11.3 million in 1994 to $387 million currently
  • Property expansion from 59 acres in 1994 to 211 acres to date.

During his Executive Director report, Pete Ramirez updated board members on the year-end report of Cooperative Program giving in California. According to Ramirez, the 2023 Cooperative Program goal was $6 million. However, receipts totaled $5,339,430, which is 88.53% of the goal and a total shortfall of $660,570. 2023 Convention expenses came to $5,865,113, putting CSBC in the red by $410,557.
“But the Lord provided for us,” Ramirez said as he reported, “investment income in 2023 brought in $749,581 which, not only covered the deficit, but allowed [CSBC] to put $339,139 in reserves.”

Ramirez reminded board members that while this was good news for 2023, “investment income is not something that can be counted on next year as the market is volatile.”
