Consider the Joy and Come to a DR Training

Consider the Joy and Come to a DR Training

When I came to faith as a younger teenager, one of the first passages of scripture I memorized was James 1:2.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” James 1:2 (NIV)

I’d like to say that it was part of a new believers’ curriculum or that I was urged to lay James 1:2 as a foundational life-verse by a wise sage of a mentor who knew the significance these words would have over the course of my life and subsequent ministry. The truth is that there was a girl in my youth group whom I was hoping to date who once said it was her favorite verse in scripture. So, I went home and memorized James 1:2, hoping an opportunity would present itself where I could impress her with my newfound (fake) spirituality.

It didn’t work.

My teenage motives may have been rooted in something selfish, but I have learned firsthand that God’s Word is powerful and effective, and that verse has ministered to me throughout the entirety of my life.

Later in life, a spiritual father once asked me this question.

“Do you know what your response will be when you live through the worst day of your life?”

This led me to wonder: What will be my response when I live through the worst day of my life? Will I be bitter? Will I blame God? Will I weep, or could I rejoice?

He followed up by asking me an even harder question:

“How would you minister to someone who has just lived through the worst day of their life?”

I had no answer.

Today, with 30 years of full-time ministry to reflect back on, I have discovered that people tend to look to God in trial, trauma, and transition. This is why I believe so much in the CSBC Disaster Relief ministry. What an incredible opportunity to minister to people as they are experiencing one of the worst days of their lives. As a pastor, I also see the value of equipping God’s people to be the church and bringing the hope of Jesus to people who are experiencing the worst day of their lives. I have walked through trial, trauma, and transition with many in my church family, and I know this to be true.

If I will be present, God will work miraculously to point people to Him for comfort, peace, and salvation. God will be glorified.

If you have a desire to see your church community come alive spiritually and move from people who ‘go to church’ to people who “are the church,” Disaster Relief is the ministry for you. I asked if we could host a training at Clovis Hills in July because I have seen the power of this ministry firsthand, and I want my congregation to have this opportunity.

To all church pastors reading this, let me encourage you to find a training day and bring some of your people to it. You will watch men and women come alive as they get trained to meet people in their worst moments and confidently bring them the hope of the Gospel.

This summer, the CSBC Disaster Relief Ministry will be hosting two training opportunities in Fresno and Santa Maria.

Mark the day on your calendar and start recruiting some unengaged members and turn them into trained and engaged ministers.
