Acteens to celebrate 50 years of missions

BIRMINGHAM, AL — An added bonus for Californians this year, the 50th anniversary of Acteens, is the first-ever national Acteen panelist from California, Dominique DuPar.

DuPar, a student at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church in La Puente, was named to the six-person panel from dozens of applicants nationwide. She will be involved in WMU meetings throughout the year, including the Acteen celebration and WMU annual meeting, prior to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Birmingham.

The Woman’s Missionary Union missions education group for girls in grades 7-12 will kick off the anniversary celebration June 7, when they bring together former Acteens to reflect on the past and look to the future.

The celebration, called Acteens for Life, will take place at national WMU headquarters in Birmingham, for all women whose lives have been impacted through Acteens in their teenage years, as well as current and former leaders. Participants will enjoy dinner together and reminisce about Acteens’ transformational influence on their lives, followed by a panel discussion on the future of missions discipleship for teen girls and how women can become involved.

Additionally, former Acteens are encouraged to join Crossover Birmingham June 8, to participate in hands-on missions throughout the Birmingham area.

Acteens for Life will be “a great time for women who have experienced Acteens to celebrate what they learned as teenagers,” said Heather Keller, Acteen missions consultant. “But even more importantly, we will challenge (them) to consider how they can help teen girls learn about and participate in missions discipleship today.”

Tickets for Acteens for Life are $30 and include dinner, a t-shirt and a gift from WorldCrafts, WMU’s fair-trade division.
